Currently I have a Nizo 6080 kit (aliminum case, matte box, charger, battery case and mic)
I also have Nizo Pro Crystal Sync'd (by the old Super8Sound) with battery case and leather case.
My dillema is:
I am thinking of getting either a Beaulieu 6008 or 7008 and sell all my Nizos to pay for it (I figure is should pay for it or most of the cost)
OR
An 16mm NPR Eclair (about $2750-5000 depending on the version, lens, accessories, condition , etc)
Or an Arriflex 16
Getting a 16mm cam would need me to sell at least the 6080 plus spend about another $3000).
I want to get another cam (super8 or 16) but I do not know what route I need to take. I want to keep some kind of Super8 equipment for experiments and run and gun shoots (Super8 film is cheaper) but I figure a Canon 814 can do that.
YOur advise and experienced would be a treasure!
Thanx to all
BTW- Other Super 8 sound I can consider selling
Goko 3003 Motorized viewer
Agfa Mint Super 8 splicer (cement)
Chinon 7500 variable speed/150 watt/ Sound projector w/ sound-on-sound recording.
I figure I can sell my Nizos and accessories for about ($1400)
6080 = $550
Pro = $700 (The at least cam is about $350- sync'ing is at least $500)
Goko 3003 = $80-120
Chinon 7500 - $100-125

I guess it depends on what your future plans are and what you plan on doing with your fininshed film. Also, can you afford to shoot 16mm as often as you like to shoot super 8?
Based on pure technical info, obviously 16mm is going to be the better of the choices. However, it's pointless having a bigger gun if you can't afford the ammo or are only hunting field mice!
I guess we need more info about your prospects.

i'd go with the NPR. super8 is great but if can swing a pro camera like that you'll never regret it. woodstock was shot on the NPR camera. 13 of them!

I mostly do shorts.
I have experience with 16. I enjoy the things you do with bigger film formats (more films stocks, variable lens, etc.). I would like to shoot my next major short (calling card purpose) in 16, but S8 is not out of the picture since I have yet to finish the script and decide on the asthetic of the film.
Shooting often in 16 is not a factor. I already know that fact and have accepted it.
Also, I can rent out my skills and 16cam with NYU film students. It would probably be very cheap - but 16 is a marketable skill.
Then why consider 6008/7008?
I love super8. Period.
The Beaulieu offers variable lens- which to me is major factor. I figure I can afford 1 (maybe 2) primes and one good zoom.
Anyways- If some of you are interested in my gear contact me. If not EBay here I come.

$5000? sounds a bit optimistic, but why own a camera that expensive anyway? have you considered how many weekends of complete package rentals you can get for that money? at least 20 i'd say, and during that time you will have spent another $1000 on maintanence. if you will indeed make money from owning it, it makes sense, and also if you're shooting an indie feature or something, but for shoting calling cards, you're better off renting for several reasons imho. a basic super 8 camera and a bolex or krasnogorsk is enough for your having-fun-and-learning-stuff projects.

$5000?
Yeah, I found somebody willing to sell
NPR 1.5 (not 2 which produce less noise) Body
Angenieux 12-120 2.2 lens
1 400' MAg
Variable motor
Crystal sync at 24
Case
cable battery & charger.
at $4,700.
You can get the body with battery and charger
for about $3000 if you shop around. It really worth about $4000 bare.
Hmmm... The only quib I have with lower model 16 is that its hard to get a paying gig with it when most film students from NYU can buy their own in EBay. But your point is well taken..
Keep em coming

Crimsonson,
Have you considered a CP-16? You could probably get a CP-16 for half the price of an NPR, and get the Beaulieau with the money that's left over. If I recall correctly, all three cameras should be able to handle C-mount lenses, so you could start building yourself a nice collection of them that you could use for both 16mm and the Super8 cameras.
Sure the CP-16 is uglier than the NPR, but it should work just as well. And it should have about as much credibility as the NPR in terms of getting paying customers. Make sure and do research about the best CP-16 model to get though (CP-16R, R/A, etc.)
Good luck!

I say, get a CP-16.
It's quiet, from what I hear, and that's a big plus. The "R" model has interchangeable lenses.
On the Super 8 front, there are lots of nice cameras, but man, the Nizo 6080 is just soooooo quiet!
All the others are too noisy for shooting dialog.
Are you happy shooting only MOS stuff or looping everything?
I'd keep the 6080 and sell everything else.

Shenan: Sorry, thats not possible... you need to adjust every lens to the camera body (exact colimnation). So you can interchange all once adjusted lenses at one body, but not at several bodys. With Beaulieu it is definitivly that way and I think with 16 mm it?s the same problem. The adjustment is neccessary to eliminate any factory tolerances of lens and body. This tolerances are very critical in S8.

Selling everything to move up to 16 makes sence, however I really don't see the point in selling a Nizo 6080 to buy a Beaulieu 6008. I own both cameras and enjoy them both, but it's too much of a lateral move.
In fact I'd give the edge to the nizo for the quiet operation already mentioned here.
I know the grass is always greener, but in this case the grass in your yard is the envy of many of your neighbors already.
